Heat pumps process industries
Industrial processes are responsible for about 50% of all heat energy produced globally and are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. In many process industries, heat is used mainly in the form of steam: This constitutes about two thirds of the process industry’s energy consumption and is thus a significant cost factor. Improving energy efficiency in industrial processes can lead to substantial primary energy savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions. The easiest way to achieve this is by using heat pumps.
MAN Heat pumps offer a proven way to convert waste heat into useful high-quality process heat and steam. The benefits are manifold: Decarbonized process heat supply, electrified heat production, fossil fuel substitution, reduced plant energy costs, availability of fossil feedstocks for production processes, and grid services.
High-performance MAN Heat pump technologies
Our high-temperature heat pumps deliver the economic and climate-friendly benefits of domestic heat pumps to large-scale industrial applications. To ensure a process steam supply, we offer heat pump systems in different configurations. For example, a combined heat pump and steam compressor or a heat pump with a separate steam compressor system that provides the required process conditions. MAN heat pumps power high pressure steam production with waste heat recovery from the processes (e.g. cooling water, process streams, etc.).
Compressors are the key component of heat pumps. MAN Heat pumps are well known in the chemical and petrochemical industries, for their high quality and performance, with hundreds of units installed worldwide. Our compressor technology is based on proven, reliable, low-maintenance oil & gas industry standards, and offers the highest efficiencies to optimize overall performance. Our heat pump systems can also be scaled to suit our customers’ needs.

Industrial heat pump study
In 2022, BASF and MAN Energy Solutions entered a strategic partnership to pursue the construction of an industrial-scale heat pump at the BASF site in Ludwigshafen. The project is intended to significantly reduce greenhouse
gas emissions by establishing the use of low-CO2 technologies in
chemical production and reducing the site’s natural gas consumption. The first step was a feasibility study.
