Changing the role of carbon in industry
The world’s industrial production needs to become carbon-neutral, fast. Avoidance, balancing, and capture are the three main carbon-reduction tactics. But not all three approaches are viable for all industrial producers. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) provides a proven and practical way of reducing emissions for large industrial plants. MAN technology plays a key part in CCUS.
How does CCUS work?
In some processes, the CO2 can be removed before combustion. The purified CO2 can then be transported to facilities that utilize CO2 as feedstock (to make synthetic fuels, beverages, dry ice, and most chemicals). It can also be stored permanently in geologically secure reservoirs.
The benefits of CCUS
First and foremost, CCUS reduces your carbon emissions, so you save on carbon emission taxes, and the CO2 you produce can become a commodity. Ultimately, CCUS integrates your plant in a new energy infrastructure centered on CO2 utilization and renewable hydrogen. CCUS connects your industrial plant with other industries and sectors including transport, utilities, municipalities, and renewable energy sources.
Compression technology for carbon capture
MAN plays a key role in carbon capture: We provide the compression technology necessary for the CO2 gas flow and the capture process (amine, cryo, PSA, membrane), with CO2 compression of up to 250 bar.
The CCUS landscape requires compression to distribute carbon dioxide to users either as a high-pressure gas in a pipeline or as a liquid in isolated low-temperature pressure vessels. Our compression solutions provide the flexibility to deliver a flow at multiple pressures, accept process-side streams, use compression heat in a process or expand gas for liquefaction services.
Our integrally geared compressor has suction flow rates of up to 500,000 m3/h and a maximum discharge pressure of up to 250 bar. With its improved impeller design, optimized pinion speeds, and tailored aerodynamics, it guarantees the highest level of efficiency.
The MAN RG compressor can contain up to ten impeller stages. This enables a very compact design, compression of a wide range of gases, and a high pressure ratio. Our complete package option consists of a compressor core unit, driver, process gas coolers, lube oil system, process piping, and auxiliaries. This ensures the shortest possible on-site installation times.
