MAN Global Sulphur Cap 2020 Industry survey report

MAN PrimeServ 15 COMPLIANCE TRENDS While low sulphur fuels are the preferred solution to comply, many people are also planning to use scrubbers. Scrubber solutions put less pressure on the need for engine retrofits (but still require some), yet what is not well known is that there is a lack of capacity for producing and installing these scrubbers before the deadline. Companies that pursue this strategy without engaging an engine partner with the resources to help may find themselves in trouble. For businesses that are planning to use compliant fuels until a scrubber solution can be fitted in 2020-21, there is a strong business case for implementing fuel-saving retrofits to maximize return on investment until then. Most need at least two months of using the new fuel to flush the system If choosing compliant fuels as a solution, when do you need to start using compliant fuels in order for the system to be flushed and ready for 1 st January 2020? 53% More than two months before 7% Two months before 10% One month before 7% A few days before 10% Already using 8% Don’t know 5% Won’t answer 60 40 20 0 We recommend you refer to the following MAN service letters to ensure a safe fuel transition: • SL2018-661: New piston ring package • SL2018-659: Cermet coated piston rings for operation on low-sulphur fuels • SL2017-640: Heavy fuel oil cleaning removal of abrasive particles • SL2014-593: Guidelines for operation on fuels with less than 0.1% sulphur
